Zachary Mexico Writes About China Underground
In the Western World we hear a lot about China’s booming economy, but not as much about the rampant pollution and
breaching of civil liberties. In an attempt to shed light on the subcultures beneath the global superpower, Zachary Mexico spent several years living in China, and has just published China Underground. In the book, readers are introduced to a wannabe rock star from the desert of Xinjiang trying to make it big in Shanghai, a disillusioned journalist, a budding screenwriter, a Chinese mafia kingpin, a vagabond ladies man, a straight-A student at China’s top university, and a punk band trying their best stay relevant. Mexico’s portrayal of Chinese society allows the reader to see the country in new ways and eliminate false preconceptions common to the outsider. By breaking down these myths with well told human stories, China Underground paints the portrait of a universal experience, thereby bridging the gap between the East and the West. The book comes out in April and is a refreshing look into an often misunderstood country.
