Gregory and the Hawk- Moenie and Kitchi

The air in
first listened to Gregory and the Hawk, I thought it was time to buy new headphones. Meredith Godreau’s soft voice and the quiet, simple sounds of her new release, Moenie and Kitchi, are easy to lose in the battle our eardrums fight everyday. But it’s worth the fight with the volume button.
At times, the disc seems to be a reincarnation of Lisa Loeb’s mid-90s acoustic angst, but thankfully transcends the crying-into-your-pillow soundtrack – though it would probably still be appropriate for the occasion. “Stonewall, Stone Fence,” introduces an almost creepy element with Godreau’s normally disarmingly sweet vocals being laid over a borderline menacing drum beat, creating a dissonant sound that is both unexpected and completely necessary to avoid having the disc dismissed as lightweight. It also helps mask some questionable lyrics such as, “You’ve got a secret, but you won’t share it.” Isn’t that sort of the point of a secret?
The mood picks up immediately, with stronger accompaniment for Godreau, giving more weight and validity to her and the album. The listener is instantly invested and while you may sort of dread the ending, you’ll be excited to listen again.
