Brett Dennen - Hope for the Hopeless
Albums
Hailing from Oakdale, CA, known as the “Cowboy Capital of the World,” Brett Dennen beautifully delivers folky, pop croons that are both heartbreaking and thoughtful. He released his first self-titled album in 2004 and recently released Hope for the Hopeless on in late of October of 2008. Beginning in 2009 Dennen will embark on his first headlining tour, visiting every major city in the US beginning with Orlando, FL in mid-January.
Heavily involved in the San Francisco based non-profit, The Mosaic Project, which works with youth in order to battle prejudice and promote peace and diversity, Dennen exhibits this same passion in his music. In songs such as “Make You
Crazy” featuring Femi Kuti, Dennen acknowledges the difficulty in being yourself in a world that tries its hardest not to let that happen. However, his lyrics “Don’t hesitate to speak your mind/ Never hesitate to speak your mind” prompts his audience to take a proactive role and break down the walls which society tends to build around us. Sending messages of optimism while recognizing the dualism and confoundedness of reality, Dennen offers a fresh voice in the music scene. When listening to his album it is hard not to feel as if one has found a friend, a companion in the vacillation between the despair of loss and heartache to the appreciation of beauty and humanity found in the every day. Hope for the Hopeless bounces from uplifting and upbeat in songs such as “San Francisco” to melancholy and downhearted with “When She’s Gone.” Its run along the spectrum of emotions is exactly what makes Dennen’s work so sincere, suffusing his music with an integrity and honesty that makes the listener want to once again believe in the goodness of the world around us.
