Eternia @ Sputnik

Snowfall and bitter cold temperatures did not stop hip-hop aficionados from making their way to Brooklyn, NY’s storied and intimate concert venue, Sputnik, to attend Canadian emcee Eternia’s “At Last We Got a Record Deal Jam.” Fans, friends and family (many of which flew in from Toronto for the occasion), gathered for the celebration of her recent record deal signing. The dedication and support of Eternia could be immediately seen entering the venue, as an overwhelming majority of those in attendance were proudly wearing the emcee’s "My Favorite Rapper Wears A Skirt" t-shirts.
Although the news of what record label the emcee was signed to wasn’t made public until late in the evening, the black, green and gold Fat Beats banner adorning the stage couldn't be more telling. Eternia officially announced at 11:46 pm that she had signed to burgeoning independent label, Fat Beats Records.
On the wheels-of-steel all night was member of the Juggaknots collective, DJ Boo. The New York born-and-raised deejay spun a myriad of hip hop classics, from A Tribe Called Quest to The Beatnuts, Gang Starr, EPMD, Kool G Rap, Brand Nubian, De La Soul, Slick Rick and more. DJ Boo also doubled as Eternia’s drummer and played alongside bass guitarist Colin Dean and beatboxer Chesney Snow.
A visibly excited and energetic Eternia took to the stage and rhymed a commanding verse over the Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg classic “Deep Cover” instrumental, immediately garnering an almost deafening response from the crowd. Eternia was on and off the stage all night, socializing with those in attendance and performing music from her extensive catalog, from the album It’s Called Life to her latest mixtape, Caught Up, including what was a definite crowd favorite, the Big L sampled “Foul Child.” Displaying the true hip-hop head that she is and the respect she has for the culture, Eternia made sure to show much love to the borough where the event was taking place by rapping along with the classic Brooklyn anthem, Notorious BIG’s “Juicy.”
Eternia was not the only emcee that graced the Sputnik stage for the celebration. Seattle-based emcee Gabriel Teodros also took the stage and performed songs from his latest album, Lovework. The West Coast native was well received by the New York crowd, and garnered the greatest response in his set with the smooth, laid-back sounds and thought-provoking lyrics of “Third World Wide.” The emcee also performed material from his free-for-download mixtape entitled GT’s Ethiopium, constructed entirely from California underground hi-hop producer Oh No’s Ethiopium project, which utilized samples from Ethiopian music.
All those that attended the event were treated to an energetic and eclectic performance by one of hip-hop’s finest emcees. Sputnik provided the proper platform for Eternia to demonstrate her lyrical abilities and commemorate an advance in her career⎯a career with endless possibilities.
