Suckers- Suckers EP
On their four-song, self-titled EP, Brooklyn’s Suckers give listeners a taste of the quartets jam infused indie rock sound.
The 4 songs feature tight vocal harmonies, horns, percussion on top of the usual drums guitar and bass. The horns and vocal harmonies which permeate this disc are what really stand out.
The album starts out with an electronic riff of keys and electric drumming which lends a ’80s vibe to the opening track. The horns kick in midway through and the vibe of the disc totally changes. The harmonies and horns are the first hint of the far more jam-influenced sound which marks the rest of the disc.
The first track, “Beach Queen” is also the most technical with the other songs being much more minimalist. The band is at their best when backed by the more organic sounds which make up the rest of the disc. “Afterthoughts & TV” features 3 or 4 voices over an airy guitar melody later supported by the backing of drums, with an infectious hook. It's a simple melody, but it lets the bands knack for catchy melodies and harmonies shine. Playful piano and horns litter the album as well, acting more like voices than instruments.
The disc’s brevity leaves listeners looking for more, and promising great things from the band. Though they haven’t been around very long, they’re already set to open for indie darlings MGMT later this summer. Hopefully it won’t be much longer until they release their full length.
