BK-One - Radio Do Canibal
Inspired by Brazilian culture, BK One’s Radio Do Canibal demonstrates not only his seasoned ear but also his ability to create a cohesive arrangement of both instrumentals and vocals capable of moving even the most stubborn listener, thoughtfully at least.
Although the album’s guest appearances include renowned acts like, Raekwon, Scarface, Brother Ali, and Phonte of Little Brother, Radio Do Canibal is more of a producers gem than a writer’s prize.
Beginning with "Ivan Tiririca," the introduction, which is spoken in a foreign language, at least to me, and layered over traditional Brazilian rhythms, the track seems to situate the listener geographically. In sequence, Brother Ali and Slug, featured on Gititit, greet you as “tour guides” and familiarize the language barrier.
As the album progresses and you meet other “guides” such as Aby Wolf, featured on "Love Like That," Black Thought on “Philly Boy,” interludes like “Caetano Veloso,” “Ivan Tiririca” and “Hyldon” are interspersed, providing rhythmic detail that keeps you immersed in Brazilian culture.
The album is as much about listening as it is about feeling. And, in partnership with Benzilla, the duo conveys this very well.
If not only for its traditional boom-bappy rap sound, the album is definitely worth a listen as a means to expand your musical taste. BK traveled the world to get this one.
